Neglect

I've definitely been slacking on the blogging lately so I thought I'd give an explanation....
This month has been CRAZY busy between:

1. Visiting family - I spent a few days in Victoria visiting my sister, bro-in-law and niece, a few days in Kamloops (well Savona actually) visiting all of the above plus my other sister, other (brand-new!!) niece and parents, a few days (again) in Savona visiting above plus a very dear family friend (and honorary "sista") AND my sister and niece visited me here in Vancouver for a couple of days too! UGH, so much family, so little time! Here are a couple pics of my two nieces who have dominated my time over the past month:

Avery Rae Weber with her Auntie Kelsey after bath time
Avery with her Grampa Hambrook (Yup, that's my dad!)
Kyra Marie Frost swinging life away
Kyra

Kyra with her Auntie Kelsey
Kyra holding baby Avery's hand... she was sooo gentle, it was adorable!
Kyra holding Avery... loving cousins!

2. I'm MOVING!!! A large part of my time has been spent looking for new apartments and trying to work out details relating to moving. This is a bittersweet step in my life... Sweet because I'm super excited to have my own space and live within walking distance of my work (so I can get rid of the money-sink that is my lovely, beautiful and gracefully aged car, Sasha)... think of all the decorating and DIY potential in my very own brand new place! This is compounded by the fact that I have NO furniture and EVERYTHING in my current apartment belongs to my roomie so I forsee lots of furniture shopping/decorating blog posts in the near(ish) future! It is also very bitter because I'll be moving away from my wonderful, hilarious, talented (and fashionable... check out his GENIUS blog here) roommate, Cassidy. FYI, Cass has been a delightful and amazing roommate for the past year, I couldn't ask for better, but our wishes in new living accommadations differ greatly so, alas, we find our co-habitation coming to an end....

3. Sometimes I work.

So, that's why I've been neglecting the blogging but I promise I'll get back on track ASAP! The big move happens this Friday so after that I should have something good to post about!

Thanks for being patient!

Play. Sing Along. Repeat.

Although I will never claim to be the most up-to-date on the "hot new music" and I'm certainly not personally musically inclined, what would life be without music? I figured since I haven't felt particularly creative this month between work and visiting family and being sick I'd post about some music that I've been finding myself hitting repeat on frequently over the past few weeks. I tend toward songs that are singable (because I'm such a stellar singer if you didn't know :P). Some of these songs are old and some are newer but I hope there's something you like!

I'm in LOVE with Joshua Radin right now. Imagine my disappointment when my obsession begins mere DAYS after he did a concert in Vancouver (Mar.8, 2011).... devastating! Anyways, some of my fav Josh songs right now include:

Joshua Radin
I'd Rather Be With You (prob his most well known song)
The Fear You Won't Fall
You Got Growin' Up To Do
Brand New Day
Sundrenched World
Star Mile

Like I said, really diggin him lately!

I'm also thoroughly enjoying Mumford & Sons. Good shit. I particularly love:

Mumford & Sons
The Cave
Little Lion Man
Winter Winds

Naturally, I need some RiRi on this list so I may as well add that now. Her latest album, "Loud", has some goodies. My favs:

Rihanna
Love the way you lie (Part II) ft. Eminem (Better than Part I in my opinion)
California King Bed
Man Down

I'm a big fan of The Script and their new album, "Science & Faith", didn't disappoint me...

The Script
Nothing
For The First Time
Science & Faith
If You Ever Come Back

And some individgies.... (yes I made that word up)..... new and old.....

Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri
Rolling in the Deep - Adele
If the Moon Fell Down - Chase Coy ft. Colbie Callait
Marry You - Bruno Mars
Starry Eyed - Ellie Goulding
Broken Strings - James Morrison ft. Nelly Furtado
Howlin' for You - the Black Keys
The House that Built Me - Miranda Lambert
Animal - Sky Ferreira
Back to December - Taylor Swift
Coming Home - Diddy Dirty Money (I feel ridic writing that name) ft. Skylar Grey
Born This Way - Lady Gaga (LOVE my Gaga)
Raise Your Glass - Pink (not gonna lie, I love the Glee-cast version more than Pink's!)
Dog Days Are Over - Florence & the Machine (I love the Glee version of this too!)
The Stand - Mother Mother
I Run To You - Lady Antebellum

So those are some of my recent favorite songs... just a few! Hope you can agree on some you like too!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SONGS/MUSICIANS RIGHT NOW?!

showing off my mussels

I should start this post with a DISCLAIMER: I'm not the most experienced chef. As the "baby" of the family, it's a running joke that I don't know how to boil water, despite the fact that both my sisters and my parents are SUPERB in the kitchen! In the last few years I've thrown caution to the wind (literally, I'm terribly un-cautious: in fact, and have frequently charc'ed food, ruined pans, started fires and lets not forget the eternal scalding of my hands and wrists no matter what I cook!) and gotten my hands dirty. I'm no culinary genius but with a good set of instructions and an empty stomach I can usually get the job done and it's sometimes even edible!

Last summer, I became a new resident of beautiful Vancouver (again - I'd previously lived here for a 6 month practicum) and I found I still felt a little something like a tourist for most of the summer. That was fine by me. I tried to take advantage of what Vancouver had to offer and oh, the many things there are.

However, one loooong, slow night shift at the hospital had me thinking of beautiful Victoria, where my sister, Rebecca, has lived for the last 8ish years. In truth, I had a strange, 4:30am mussel craving. "Mussels de cha cha cha" to be exact. There is a restaurant in Victoria called "Tapa Bar" which makes mussels steamed in a fiery-hot, delish (yes, that's a flavour descriptor) sauce with bread for dipping; an absolute favorite of Rebecca and I's. Since the craving arose strong that night (including mouth-watering.... maybe I should eat more on night shifts?), I decided I'd attempt my own version of this dish!

Naturally, I ventured to the tourist-hub and fishmonger extraordinaire that is Granville Island. I grabbed some fresh mussels and found the MOST delicious focaccia bread in the Public Market at Duso's pasta. I looked at recipes online and none of them seemed to be right at all so I made up my own. It turned out really nothing like cha cha cha but it was delicious nonetheless! Here's how I made my mussels happen...........

1-2lbs fresh mussels
1tsp olive oil
1/4cup onion, finely diced
1-3 red chili peppers, whole or diced depending how much spice you like
1cup dry white wine
1 tomato, finely diced
salt and pepper to taste
3 cloves garlic, minced (I LOVE garlic and so use WAY more than 3 cloves but I figure 3 is a good normal number if you're not a garlic fanatic!)
focaccia bread in large cubes or slices

1. Scrub and de-beard your mussels. It helps to soak them in cool water and change the water every few minutes (by taking the mussels out FIRST and then draining the water and dirt so they open and any sand or dirt falls to the bottom of the bowl).

2. Saute onions in oil until soft and translucent. Add red chilis and cook another minute or two.

3. Add white wine, tomato, s&p, and garlic. Here you could also add chicken stock or fish sauce for more broth, lemon juice, other herbs such as cilantro, basil, oregano, jalapenos, etc. I've tried cilantro and that worked nicely but I'm sure you could take it where-ever you want!

4. Add your cleaned and de-bearded mussels, cover, and steam until mussels are JUST open (about 5-10minutes but after 5 minutes I watch mine very closely and as soon as most are opening up I remove from heat because they'll continue cooking in the hot broth). If there are any "dud" mussels that didn't open during the cooking process, toss 'em out!

5. Serve with bread and enjoy!

I know mussels are a bit scary looking but when cooked right they are soft (not chewy AT ALL) and soak up the flavours of their broth and you can eat them off the shell if you want which is kinda fun! And the sauce is amazing with a nice good bread to soak it up! If you've never tried mussels, I strongly recommend them. If you have, give this recipe a try and let me know what you think!

Happy experimenting!

DIY: Headboard

Soooo... continuing on where I left of with my last headboard post.... I DIY'ed a headboard using scrapbook paper. Remember my inspiration?:

Well, mine turned out a liiiiiittle different. Although my room is sort of lacking in any concrete design theme, I've had a vision for a long while and I have a few pieces to start off the look. My duvet cover is red and I have some black and white floral pillows (thanks Ikea) for my bed.

I also have two bedside lamps with a similar floral pattern (thanks Walmart). This photo comes along with some obvious night-stand necessities... a candle, a good book and an eye-mask (my saving grace for working shift-work: Thanks, Mama Ham!).

So, with these items for inspiration and a colour theme, I hit up Michael's, found some scrapbook paper fitting my theme and made my way home to make my headboard creation. Michael's happened to be having a great sale on scrapbooking paper so some of the paper was as low as 20cents/sheet! However, in true Kelsey fashion, my attention was drawn to the textured and bedazzled paper so most of my sheets were a whopping $3.50/sheet... damn. However, it still only ended up totalling about $30 so in the grand-scheme of headboards that's a steal! I did learn that the more "textured" the paper, the heavier it is and that glittered paper is a BITCH with tape because everything was covered in black glitter. I actually forgot to buy double sided tape so I used my scrapbook photo mounting squares which, let me tell you, are NOT strong enough to hold this paper (sheets are falling off the wall as I type so I'll have to re-tape them later) but it should stay up fine when I get a better sticking medium. I was too excited to get it done and share the photos to wait for when I had better tape! Anyways, here's my creation:

I realize this is VERY BOLD but I think it's also romantic, sexy and definitely funky. My version is NOT for the faint of heart! The best part about this headboard is that it's so simple to change whenever I feel like it! For now, I'm loving how unique and attention-grabbing it is... my whole room is transformed and I can't keep my eyes off it! My favorite paper choices turned out to be the expensive ones, of course. The all-red paper is actually a velvet and looks really textured and elegant in real-life. The black is sparkly and adds a completely different element of texture and a whole lot of glamour! But my most favorite paper is this:

The black floral bits are velvety AND sparkly (winning!) and the background is vintagey-looking book pages! I absolutely LOVE this paper! When I found it in the store it reminded me that I forgot to post the picture of the book pages headboard in my last post so I'm gonna add it here:

RoomPolish

Being the nerd that I am, of course I LOVE this idea but as fun and interesting as it is, I think I'm more of a romantic-bedroom type so it probably won't be gracing the top of my bed anytime soon. I do, however, think it would make a great feature-wall in a small office! Or would it look kinda creepy and psycho-stalkerish? In any case,  I'll keep it in mind for when I have a small office!

Oh, and I almost forgot... the sun set on my decorating (literally, not figuratively) and made for a delicious view from my bedroom window.....

I hope you like my first DIY project and even if it's not your own personal style the take-home message is that this is a great, simple, inexpensive and non-committal headboard (or wall-art or decorating in any sense really) idea that you can take in ANY direction using ANY colour, pattern or combination you want!

Lovely, lovely headboarding!

head(board) over heels

Despite living outside my parents' home for nearly two years, I have next to nothing to show for myself as far as furniture, and interior design pieces go. I've been meaning to improve on this for AGES but just never get around to it. Lately, I've been jonesin' for a headboard for my bed.... I have a few ideas but nothing has materialized at the top of my bed as of yet.

Originally, I had planned on making a collage of sorts of various canvas paintings that include patterns, words (quotes, lyrics, or individual words), images, etc. This hasn't been established yet and my painting skills are less than developed so I'm not holding my breath for it to happen any time soon. (However, I've recently decided to take up painting and got some very basic starter supplies last Christmas so I will be posting about honing my painting skills in the near future!). That's for another time though.

In the meantime, here are some other ideas that strike my fancy.

Apartment Therapy

I found this one as a DIY on apartmenttherapy.com. I'm not sure this is something I'm up for (requiring things like upholstery needles and wood screws... eeek!) but it looks great so if you're skillful enough, hop on it!

This delightful headboard made of shutters is so endearing and I thoroughly enjoy every second of the distressed, worn look. Doesn't this just make you think of those amazingly sweet beach houses at Cape Cod or the Hamptom's in movies... who wouldn't wanna channel that feeling in your bedroom? I'm not sure that it's exactly what I'm looking for right now but when I re-image my bedroom it may be just the look I go for...

Diva Design Diary
Apparently this metal headboard is simple to make (I'm assuming with the help of professionals) and inexpensive. It's made out of corrugated metal roofing cut into a great, classic headboard shape. Looks sexy and expensive to me. I'd go for this if I had any idea where to get and cut corrugated metal.....

HGTV

Next up, I also LOVE these three ideas from a fellow blogger (clearly WAY more experienced and talented than myself at blogging), Lovely Undergrad.

Lovely Undergrad c/o flowerwine
This is such a wonderful re-purposed way of using a garden gate. Apparently you can use annnnything for headboards which opens my eyes to a whole new world (thanks Aladdin) of ideas for my headboard. LU says this is a garden gate from the regular old home improvement store, Lowe's. Unfortunately, Lowe's hasn't made it to BC yet but Home Hardware has this less intricate version that might do the trick:

My queen-sized bed is roughly 60 inches across and 25 inches high so size-wise this is a perfect fit! Definitely a good option and would be a lot easier than the fabric one above, although less comfy to sit against (and possibly louder if ya know what I'm saying.... I never said this was a G-rated blog). Here are more from LU.

Lovely Undergrad c/o Better Homes and Gardens

This lettered one looks fantastic but it would take me a long time to find a good assortment of letters so this is also on hold for now.

Lovely Undergrad c/o I Heart Norwegian Wood

This one is made up of straight scrapbook paper pages of various patterns all put up with double sided tape. Love love LOVE it. This is an ingenious way to create the effect of a headboard on a budget and when you're a renter like me, an excellent way to add a "piece of furniture" without having to figure out how to move it into and out of your various apartments over the years. It's also a great interim headboard for while I try to figure out a more grown-up, long-term solution. And amazingly, I am well established in the art that is scrapbooking (one of the only artforms I've embraced for years and actually feel semi-confident in). But, even if you aren't, there are walls of scrapbook paper of all colors and patterns at Michael's and bigger cities like Vancouver have numerous craft stores or scrapbooking specific stores with even more selection. You can even find virtually ANY kind of scrapbook paper you could ever dream of online.

Stay tuned for my version of this scrapbook paper headboard in the very near future and maybe even another DIY headboard in the further-away future! I'd love input about other headboard ideas, how-to's, etc.

And so it begins.....

Recently, a few of my friends have started blogs and I intend to jump on that band-wagon and try my hand at it. I can't guarantee I'll always be particularly interesting but I hope there's a little something for everyone in my rantings!

I've never been particularly "gifted" in the fine arts.... my two sisters had that covered, while I sufficed as the "science nerd" of the fam.... But, alas, everyone needs a creative outlet and I've discovered over the last few years that I'm included in that. I've begun to dabble in a few of the fine arts and feel I'd have better luck sharing my successes and failures with the creative world of my friends, peers and fellow bloggers.

And, just to mix things up a bit, I may ramble away from "art" and into other aspects of life from time to time since (everyone who knows me knows) I LOVE having my opinions on everything! :)

I am VERY open to input, opinions, ideas and everything of the sort so please COMMENT openly and honestly! Thanks for delving-in to a little piece of my soul!
